Ants are taking over our kitchen and up stairs bedrooms!  This is the first time in years, I recall seeing so many ants.   My wife and I initially thought these creatures were termites.   In a panic, I immediately went to the website to determine how one can tell the difference between an ant and a termite.  The ant’s body is segmented in three parts; waste is very narrow and has antennas that take the form of a field goal post (football).  The termite’s body is not segmented and the antennas are straight out.

So why are the ants invading the home?  We’ve had so much rain in the last few months, resulting in ants seeking higher ground.

Some ants can actually establish a nest inside your home.   One ant colony you should be mindful of is the carpenter ants.  These ants cause structural damage to wood by tunneling and nesting inside wood structures. However, they rarely nest in good wood, but invade wood that has become wet and started to decay. Carpenter ants are large (about 3/8 to 1/2" long) and black or red.

The best way to deal with ants is to take preventive measures: caulk cracks around the window and doors, good sanitation, remove dead stomps on property and keep bushes around the house trimmed.

We would like to know if you are having an infestation of ants.  If so, what are you doing?  Comment below.
