A Background on Colors

Yellows and Oranges: These colors are uplifting colors and could be used in kitchens and sunrooms. They will quickly brighten your mood when you walk into them.

Browns and Rust Colors: These colors can make a room feel more cozy, warm, and comfortable. They are good for studies and media rooms.

Pale Colors: Pale colors can give a room a sense of calmness. These colors include mauves, lavenders, and rose tones. Bedrooms and laundry rooms are a good place to use these colors.

Whites: Whites are really good form trim, ceilings, doors, and wainscoting. Using whites in a room will make the other color pop more and give the sense of being clean and simple.

Reds: Red tones generate excitement, but be careful, it is also a color that makes you want to eat more.

Blues and Greens: These are cooler colors than reds obviously but they are good in many different areas. Did you know that blues create a feeling of distance, love, peace and happiness? Light blues create a feeling of calm, cool, and soothing. Doityourself.com states that “blue has a tranquilizing effect, generates a sense of well being, and imparts a refreshing feeling. It also produces an environment of love, peace, and sexuality. The cool, calming effect of light blue is pleasing and can induce one to sleep. Blue is, thus, a favorite color bedrooms.” For more info on the significance of the color blue go to http://www.doityourself.com/stry/colorblue

It is important to pick a color that will blend well with the furniture in your room. There are several different ways to choose a color palate. First, you can choose a monochromatic color scheme. This is where you have one color, but use different shades or hues of that one color. For instance you choose a lighter blue for the walls, but the fabric on your furniture is done in darker shades of blue. Another scheme is the complimentary colors. They are the colors opposite of each other on the color wheel, reds and greens, yellows and purples, and blues and oranges. Or you can use an analogous color scheme which uses colors that are right next to each other on the color wheel such as shades of blues and greens that are next to each other. A triadic color scheme uses colors that are evenly spaces around the color wheel such as green, orange, and purple. So when you are trying to pick a color scheme for your room, look at a color wheel  and decide if you want colors that are the same or totally opposite for a distinct difference.

If you are trying to sell your home, then warm neutral colors are the best way to go. Bright and bold colors are not pleasing to everyone and could possibly scare people off.

When choosing paint that flows from room to room, you should choose elements of each room that will flow with the color of the other rooms. Having analogous color schemes in the connecting rooms can be a great way to flow from room to room.

Now, you are ready to go choose the perfect colors for your space. Have fun. Let us know how you have used color in your home.
